The votes are in, and our Athlete of the Week for Oct. 18 to Oct. 24 is: Jordan-Elbridge volleyball's Caroline Moch!
Moch has been an integral piece to Jordan-Elbridge’s five straight wins in straight sets. She totaled 58 assists during a four-win week to close out the regular season. During a sweep at Hannibal on Oct. 19, the sophomore tied her season high of 20.
Moch has tallied 10-plus assists eight times this year, with all but one occurring during the back half of the Eagles' schedule. She followed up a strong week with another 10 assists and 10 service points in a sweep of Syracuse Academy of Science on Oct. 27 in the quarterfinals of the Section III, Class C bracket.
Heindel also leaped to make two blocks in a row on a point late in the first set.
“She’s a great player, great teammate and she’s our captain,” Smart said. “She played very well.”
Senior Grace Lam paced the team with 10 digs and reached a career milestone of 300. She and Heindel achieved their benchmarks in just two seasons on varsity.
Meanwhile, Syracuse Academy of Science made a late run in the second set. The Atoms came within 17-23 after winning the set’s longest rally, and then 19-23 on a kill that ricocheted through three Eagles. Smart called a timeout and J-E hung on.
“I probably told them to play their game and clean it up,” Smart said of her message in the huddle. “I tell ‘em that a lot.”
The Eagles got off to a strong start in the third set with Brooke Boeglin serving, as she and Caroline Moch both tallied 10 service points on the night. Moch also recorded 10 assists, while Grace Rusyniak had 11. The final set went back and forth until around the mid-teens, when Jordan-Elbridge started to pull away.
The Eagles will next play No. 2 LaFayette on Nov. 4 in the semifinals at Bishop Ludden-Grimes.

Jordan-Elbridge girls volleyball swept Syracuse Academy of Science, 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-16), in the first round of the Section III, Class C playoffs on Tuesday.
The No. 3 Eagles got to host, yet their gym fell silent as the No. 6 Atoms seized an early lead. A few kills on the outside by Brielle Whitten calmed things down. Whitten led J-E with 11, and by the end of the third set, the home crowd was chanting.
“Brielle Whitten was a hitter who really stepped up today,” Jordan-Elbridge head coach Robin Smart told The Citizen. “She was on fire on the outside.”
Senior Brianna Heindel chipped in eight kills, which was enough to break the school’s all-time single-season (184) and career (338) records. Both previously belonged to Kali Kimak, who graduated in 2014.
